Hi people! My name is Ana, I'm Portuguese and I'm an AC fan since I was about 14. My favourite novels are "And then there were none" (ten little niggers), "The murder of Roger Ackroyd", "4.50 from Paddington", "Death on the Nile" and "After the Funeral". I've got at least 35 of her books. There are naturally novels that I didn't like, such as "Elephants can remember", "Postern of fate", "Nemesis" or "The labours of Hercules". Reading Agatha's books is like a vice (but a good one! )

Welcome to Anaseven, Discpula de Poirot, and Adrian!
Anaseven, my name is James, and welcome to my humble Poirot/Agatha Christie forum! It is always so nice to have new people join, even if it's hard to find time to come and leave a message or discuss something.
The novels you listed are some of my favorites, too! I absolutely love "Roger Ackroyd" and "Nile". A book that I feel that many people don't know about is "After the Funeral". What a fantastic book that is! I'd have to say that my favorite Agatha Christie novel would be "And Then There Were None". (When I read it in school, it was titled "Ten Little Indians".) If you want to talk about any of those books, that's great!
I own over 50 of her books (and novels included in big volumes), but I agree with you that there are some novels that aren't so good. I didn't like "Elephants", "Cards on the Table", "Curtain", "Three Act Tragedy", and "Destination Unknown". However, Agatha is still the best author for me!
You mentioned reading AC is a good vice . . . I definitely agree. On my website, I wrote that Agatha Christie books make reading a great hobby. I still believe that! |

I've bought "Three Act Tragedy" 3 weeks ago and...I don't know what's happening to me normally I read an AC novel in two days, but with this one...I've only read 3 or 4 chapters so far! I can't concentrate myself in this one, it's terrible!
I'm trying to re-read "Curtain" too. I've read it for the first time 6 or 7 years ago and honestly I got myself quite disappointed . But there's so many people that actually adore this book that I'll give it a second look now that I'm older and wiser .
Don't you think that some of the endings that Agatha presents us are quite predictable? (A murder is announced for example - I liked this book but everything is very clear)
Bye!! Agatha 4ever! |

Hey, Anaseven--
You mentioned you were struggling with "Three Act Tragedy". I, too, had trouble reading it. Like you, it doesn't take me many days to read AC novels, but it was slow for that book. I couldn't stand it! Badly written, too.
You listed "Labours of Hercules" as one that you didn't like. It wasn't that bad, if I remember. Most of the stories were pretty good I think. Like the one were Poirot was in Switzerland trapped, the one of the 'Stymphalean Birds' (spelling??), and the one with Atlas holding up the world was hilarious to me.
Yeah, some stories are predictable. I felt that way with "Hickory Dickory Dock" and "Appointment with Death". "Dock" was I think a great book!!! (But I enjoyed the adaptation of it with David Suchet as Poirot.) |
